Gail is right on with her assessment of wilderness programs. Although young people will benefit from the clinical therapy they receive at these programs, the greatest benefit comes from being in an environment which cannot be manipulated: Nature. I have found that the programs that add or subtract from this by contriving consequences (adding rocks to the packs, etc) really take away from the full benefit of their program. There are a couple of programs--one in Arizona and the other in Utah that honor the amazing impact that Nature can have on the youth participants. Do your research! Ask for a reference list of parents with whom you can talk!

I agree that wilderness program is a big help for troubled teens and defiant teens to overcome their behavioral and emotional problems. It also helps young people to identify and work through internal conflicts and emotional obstacles that have kept them from responding to parental efforts, schools, and treatment.
