What are the Different Types of Therapy Found at Treatment Center?

What are the Different Types of Therapy Found at Treatment Center?

Every therapy treatment center, regardless of what behavior disorder or emotional problem they are designed to treat, will use a combination of different therapeutic approaches to achieve their overall goals in modifying behavior.  Treatment center therapy is used for both adults, and teens to correct or improve hundreds of problems found in people suffering various types of conditions.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, depending on the disorder, in addition to medication where necessary, the different types of treatment center therapy will include:

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy – This has been proven to help people with behavioral disorders needing to learn how to change inappropriate or negative thought patterns and behaviors associated with their illness.

Psycho-Educational Therapy - This is a common treatment center therapy in which people are taught about their illness and its treatment, and how to recognize signs of relapse so that early intervention can be sought before a full-blown illness episode occurs. Psycho-education also may be helpful for family members, who may be encouraged to attend sessions for this therapy at the treatment center as well.

Family Therapy - This uses strategies to reduce the level of distress within the family that may either contribute to or result from the ill person's symptoms.  Stress makes everything harder to deal with no matter how large or small the issue really happens to be.  It is important that the family be strong enough to support the person dealing with behavior or mental disorders.

Interpersonal and Social Rhythm Therapy - This is a relatively new therapy in use at some treatment centers that helps people with certain disorders both to improve interpersonal relationships and to regularize their daily routines. For example in people with Bipolar Disorder, regular daily routines and sleep schedules may help protect against manic episodes.

Depending on your disorder, you will get all the help you need from your treatment center therapy programs.  Discuss your own family’s needs with your counselor or child’s counselor to find out just what treatment therapy will give you the results you need to maintaining happiness in your home.
