What Everyone Should Know About Teenage Help Centers

No parent wants to be faced with the realization that their child has runaway from home.  It happens though, for various reasons; perhaps the child had a bad argument with their parents or the reason has nothing at all to do with their parents, but whatever the reason, children still run away from home.  In fact, one out of every seven children will run away from home before the age of 18.

Many parents live in denial that their child would ever do such a thing, but it never hurts to err on the side of caution.  As a parent you should make it a point to sit down and tell your children about teenage help centers.

Many parents view the idea of a teenage help center as an organization that works to take children away from their parents, but his couldn’t be farther from the truth.  One teenage help center in particular, the National Runaway Switchboard, actually provides articles and resources for parents and children on how to best get along and communicate with each other without letting events get out of hand and lead to the child running away.

It is not the mission of a teenage help center to take a child away from his/her parents.  The ultimate goal is to help keep children off the streets.  When children call a teenage help center for help, they are directed to shelters where they can sleep, or they are directed to where they can get medical treatment, even counseling services.  Teenage help centers also work to help mediate discussions and problems between children and parents.

As a parent, don’t be afraid to discus teenage help centers with your child, especially if the situation between you and your child is volatile and you think he/she might be considering running away.  A teenage help center may just help save your child’s life if he/she does runaway.
