When looking into different residential treatment centers, make sure that the facility is accredited with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare (JCAHO). By being accredited, you can be assured that they have met stringent requirements. Another advantage of sending your teen to an accredited RTC is that you increase your chances of your insurance company picking up the tab! Often an insurance company will pay for up to 60 days in an RTC type facility. Unfortunately, short term placement can seem like a vacation to your teen and unless you are willing to send them for a long-term placement, it may be a waste of time.

 

Residential Treatment Centers are all different and can vary in the length of stay for a teen, as well as the cost involved. Occasionally, an insurance company will pay for a long-term stay. Find out what your insurance company will cover before searching out an RTC for your child. Remember that if you do find yourself having to place your teen in a residential treatment center, it's not because you're a failure as a parent! The fact that you have taken this step proves that you're a terrific parent - one that wants only what's best for the son or daughter that you love!

I totally agree with you              Reply to this Comment Hi All, I am a mother of four, three boys and one girl. Three months ago we admitted our son, who had become addicted to meth, to a residential treatment center in Utah. Without mentioning the RTC, we are very excited about our son's progress and our family's, and hope he will be able to come home by the end of the year, God willing. We struggled with the decision for months and finally contacted an educational consultant for residential treatment centers through the National Youth Network. I believe their web address is http://www.nationalyouth.com. I would highly recommend using an educational consultant if you are considering placing a child in the care of a treatment center. Our consultant explained the difference between various programs and treatment centers, reputations, outcome studies and helped us to choose an RTC that met our needs including financial. I have a son now who is almost 19 who is labled as Mental Retarded, ADHD, Bi- Polar and has seizures due to rage. He smokes weed all day and he think that it should take the place of his medicine. He is out of control. I don't know where he need to go but he curse my 75 yr old mother out as well as he curse me out too. He has been doing this for sometime now because no mother want to put her child away but this has gotten to the point where it's no where else to turn. I am tired of the situation and he need help. He don't care about anybody or anyone he has threaten us and he just don't care. He is not taking any medicine because he don't choose to take it. I am at my end and I need help in finding him a place to go. If you can give me any pointers please let me know. I am in dire need. I feel like no mother or grandmother that has raised a child should go through this at all. Please I need help.
