Juvenile ADD
Being diagnosed with a psychological disorder can be traumatic for anyone, but it can be especially hard news for a young person to hear. In recent years, an increasing number of young Americans have been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD). Many who are diagnosed with juvenile ADD begin to feel that they are abnormal, sick, or cursed.
The fears that those with juvenile ADD have are justified; after all, there is the possibility that they may have to undertake a daily regiment of stimulant medication or attend weekly therapy meetings. There is also the chance that their juvenile ADD could stretch well into adulthood. This could be a disorder that they will have to combat for the rest of their lives.
However, the benefits of diagnosis greatly outweigh the cons. Children diagnosed with juvenile ADD will know that their inability to focus, their hyperactivity, and their desire for instant gratification is not due a deformity in their character. Those with juvenile ADD are not bad people and nor are their parents to blame for their behavior. It has been scientifically verified that a chemical imbalance in the brain of sufferers is to blame for this disorder.
Perhaps the largest benefit to diagnosis is that it can instill hope in sufferers. Therapy can be a calming influence on those with juvenile ADD; they will receive an outlet for their innermost feelings and frustrations. Additionall,y a therapist can teach them coping skills to combat some of their impulsive behavior.
While the thought of taking medication can be intimidating, it is important to note that the dosages prescribed are much too low to instigate a feeling of euphoria. Instead, the medication will enable those with juvenile ADD to focus and control their impulsive behavior.
