Child ADD Disorder

Some of the pitfalls today’s youth must maneuver through include a new generation of illegal drugs, an increasingly violent school environment, and the rising threat of global terrorism.  With stressors such as these, it seems almost cruel that so many of today’s juveniles must also come to combat Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD); many youths must now struggle with a child ADD disorder.

Someone afflicted with a child ADD disorder will often show symptoms such as hyperactivity (excessive physical movement), a short attention span (inability to concentrate on individual tasks), and poor impulse control (inability to focus on things which do not bring them instant gratification).  In school, those with a child ADD disorder are often dismissed as being unruly or rude; all this, due to a disability which the child cannot control.

Roughly 5% of the United States’ population suffers from this disorder yet scientists are not certain what causes the genetic defect found in sufferers.  They do know that a chemical imbalance occurs for all who suffer from a child ADD disorder; this means that they cannot prevent the disorder, but they can help hinder its effects once someone is diagnosed with a child ADD disorder.

Most child ADD disorders are remedied with some combination of three methods.  The most commonly used method is medication.  Stimulant medications like Adderall and Ritalin are prescribed to help regulate brain activity.  These medications have been proven to be the most effective method of fighting a child ADD disorder.  Medications work for the majority of sufferers; however, medication alone is not enough for some sufferers.

Behavioral and cognitive therapy are helpful in normalizing the lives of sufferers.  In therapy, those with a child ADD disorder can consult with a licensed professional regarding coping skills to help the sufferer regain control of their lives.
