ADHD Increase
Many sufferers with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are written off as being being intentionally rude, impulsive, or disruptive. It is astounding that so many people have a negative view of sufferers considering there has been a significant ADHD increase in the past few years. This ADHD increase can be attributed to many things, but the main concern of the medical community is how to treat the cases they already have.
Recent estimates are that roughly 5% of the United States’ population is afflicted with this disorder. This number is astounding considering the disorder itself was coined in the past century. Thus, one of the major factors to include in the discussion of this ADHD increase is the relative newness of the disorder.
Since the disorder is becoming popular amongst the medical community, many doctors and psychologists are finding it easier to diagnose those who display the characteristics of the disorder. The disorder was not common knowledge amongst the medical community fifty years ago, thus many sufferers went untreated. Now that doctors are more knowledgeable about this disability, there seems to be a dramatic ADHD increase in the population.
There are other explanations which have been proposed when discussing this ADHD increase. One popular theory blames the surge in artificial food additives for the ADHD increase. According to this theory, more food companies are utilizing food additives and these unnatural ingredients are affecting the brain chemistry of young consumers.
While this theory is intriguing, many in the medical field doubt that the ADHD increase is caused by this. According to researchers, this disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. This imbalance seems to be genetic in nature. Therefore, the ADHD increase is in no way related to nutritional.
