ADD Management

Psychological disorders can interfere with the daily lives of many sufferers.  Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) can hinder a sufferer’s abilities to effectively communicate or successfully manage their day-to-day tasks.  It is important that sufferers develop methods of ADD management to aid them in these areas of their lives.

Various strategies of ADD management are often discussed in therapy.  A behavioral therapist can identify the particular symptoms of the sufferer’s disorder and then help them ameliorate these particular challenges.  The methods of ADD management that a therapist might suggest include simple ways of tackling the most challenging tasks one step at a time.

Typical features requiring ADD management include a short attention span, impulse control issues, and excessive physical movement. Thus, if the sufferer has trouble focusing on a homework assignment due to their short attention span, a therapist might suggest breaking this task down into smaller, more controllable tasks.  If the sufferer has trouble remembering what they need to accomplish during the day, a common form of ADD management is list making.  It might be difficult for a sufferer to accomplish more than seven tasks, especially if they are attempting to multi-task.  However, if they form lists they can organize their thoughts and decide which tasks need to be accomplished, in order of importance.

Another popular form of ADD management is medication.  Since the disorder is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain, certain stimulant medications can normalize the sufferer’s brain activity.  This form of ADD management can be daunting for those who fear the formation of a drug habit; it is important to note that the dosages prescribed are not high enough to cause euphoria or be habit forming.  The most common stimulant medications include Ritalin, Adderall, and Dexedrine.
