Characteristics of Impulsive Behavior Disorder

Characteristics of Impulsive Behavior Disorder

An impulsive behavior disorder by definition is a condition in which the destructive behavior is uncontrollable often occurring with little or no warning.  What must be understood about these illnesses is that the person experiencing these feelings does not have any sense of control over the sometimes devastating effects.

The most popular diagnoses for an impulsive behavior disorder is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), also referred to as Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD).  This condition is most likely to be found in middle age children, five and up, and can be treated using a combinations of prescription drugs and therapeutic techniques.

According to website MayoClinic.com, which offers tons of advice on mental and physical health related issues, impulsive behavior disorder is associated with two common misbehaviors, inattention and hyperactivity.

Inattention behavior includes; lack of ability to focus, regular instances of unreasonable distraction, unorganized conduct in thoughts and actions, resistance in putting forth effort, and irrational absentmindedness.  While these are all typical behaviors that all children will present if they interfere with everyday life it could be considered an impulsive behavior disorder.
Hyperactivity behavior includes; continuous restlessness, inability to follow through when instructed, reckless activity which happens regularly, constant attention seeking by being loud and outrageous, impatience even during short time periods, and unawareness of common manners.  As with inattention behaviors these signs individually are to be expected, but when excessive can lead to greater problems.

A specialist can examine your child and give you their opinion on the chances of your child exhibiting an impulsive behavior disorder.  Using the results of this assessment the physician can form a plan that will work best for you and your child.  When seeking a credible doctor you must bear in mind that each doctor will offer a different opinion.  Therefore, it is ultimately your job as the parent to accept or decline each person’s advice.
