Typical Child Learning Behavior

Typical Child Learning Behavior

Human beings, including children, have different behavior patterns. We react to things and situations differently and our responses are based on prior experiences as children and adults. Children also react to situations differently, especially when it comes to academics. All parents want their wards to excel in studies. However, a child’s learning behavior may differ from one to another. It is important for parents to understand this difference since it is possible that the child’s learning behavior that may be considered as a problem may only be the typical behavior of that particular child and nothing to worry about.

The scenario has changed in schools. The format of curriculum has been vastly modified and teachers are not able to provide individual attention to children. Also, social life has suddenly become very important for children. These factors largely determine a child’s learning behavior. A child may not seem to be dedicated towards studies or may lack determination to succeed if he does not devote enough time to studies. The lack of concentration occurs due to the fact that children are known to be impatient and curious by nature and it is not possible to engage them in one activity for a long time. While high school students can focus for over an hour, first-graders are unlikely to last more than 15 minutes on a single task.  Having said that, there are some things that you as a parent can do to improve your child’s learning behavior.

Parents can help shape a child’s learning behavior. The first thing that a parent needs to do is to set some rules during the study hour. This helps in instilling a certain discipline in your child. The importance of the study hour needs to be emphasized and it is essential to eliminate all the distractions like television, phone etc. during this time. This helps in creating an environment that is conducive for your child’s concentration. It will also help them in becoming regular with their studies and lessons. Since it is difficult to maintain concentration for a long time, it is advisable that you allow your child to take breaks, perhaps as a reward for finishing a section of the work. It is important to watch out for signs of frustration when a child is completing his assignment. The frustration may be due to the fact that either the assignment is too long or is too difficult. You should try and explain the assignment to your child and clear his concepts so that he starts to enjoy his activity.

Schools also play an important role in shaping a child’s learning behavior. If you notice that your child is becoming indifferent to the school, try and get to the bottom of the problem. If your child does not gel with his teachers, you should talk to his teachers or the student counselor about building closer relationship by talking to your child once in a while. Social problems also affect a child’s learning behavior. If your child does not have friends at school, it could dampen the self-esteem of your ward resulting in poor performance at school. Talk to the student counselor for advice.

There is no magic solution to address a child’s learning behavior. It is important for a parent to try and get to the bottom of the problem and then think about the solutions.
