Learning About Peer Pressure: Helping Teens
Peer pressure is possible one of the most difficult of things a teenage may face. From fitting in with the other to experimenting with drugs, they have to face these difficult issues daily. It is important for you to be a proactive parent, do not wait for your teen to come to you with peer pressure issues. Start teaching them while they are young, on how to deal with peer pressure. From the time they first start interacting with other children there is pressure.
People of all ages have a natural need to fit in. An example or early peer pressure is when the other kids in the playground are standing on the swings and tease your child for not doing it, your child will want to do it so he or she will not be laughed at or made fun of. It is very difficult to be the only one to say no. Make sure you teach your children early in life that they are individuals and that it is ok for them to say no to people. Teaching them right from wrong and praising them for the right choices will help them in later years.
Guide your teen as to what peers would be good to be around. He would want to find peers that have the same interests and values. This will be helpful when peer pressure arises, as it is easier to say no when there is more than just one saying it. Help your teen get a good support system with friends his or her age as you will not be able to fight all of his battles. Having a friend on his side when peer pressure arises, will make him feel he has more control and then he or she will be more likely to say no and make the right decision
