YES! to Community ServiceReply to this Comment
I totally agree with your comment on getting your teen involved in community service.
Community service is an excellent way to both develop the student and to have something extra to place on your student's college applications. It helped out daughter tremendously, and was an impetus to her earning many thousands in scholarships!
So I say Yes! to Community Service.!

College AdmissionsReply to this Comment
Research has shown that even if a teen spent a few minutes with another academically student from top colleges can change his/her perspective on education.
I have recently started a community of students, parents and educators, whose goal is to share college admissions advice. In this community, teens can meet other academically motivated teens from around the world who is motivated to go to college. Kids can also participate in online seminars hosted by students from top colleges about the college application process. My hope is that I can foster a college going culture amongst kids.

Motivation is the key to college successReply to this Comment
One of the biggest differences between school and college is in the level of follow-up and external motivation offered by teachers. Let's be honest, in schools teachers are always chasing up assignments, checking homework, etc. But in college, teachers figure that students should be able to motivate themselves. And that's a problem! Because many students haven't learnt how to develop that internal motivation. Which means that many of them get to college and then struggle, because they've got no one to hassle them to get their work done on time. So motivation is the key to college success.
Helping students get motivatedReply to this Comment
It's like the difference between a baby bird - always squawking for attention from its parents, and a baby turtle - left to fend for itself in the big world. We need to help our students develop that internal motivation. You can find some great ideas to help them with this here - www.asktheteacher.com.au/parent_info.htm
